Places we stayed in Macedonia
Strumica (85k from Sandanski Bulgaria) – Hotel 404, Blagoj Jankov Mucheto 13, Strumica. We paid 1600 MKD for a double room with ensuite, free wi-fi in room, satellite TV with English channels, simple breakfast (coffee, juice, packaged croissant) included. Bikes stored in storage area off of the reception area. Nice clean hotel right in the city center up on the pedestrian street. Room was clean and comfortable. Most of the people working there speak English and are helpful in giving advice about places to eat, where to get a sim card, etc.
Kavadarci (91k from Strumica) – Hotel Feni, Ulica Cvetan Dimov bb, 1430 Kavadarci. We paid 3000MKD for a double room with ensuite, free wi-fi in room, breakfast included. Bikes were stored in storage room off of the lobby. This is a relatively fancy hotel is at the edge of town, a good distance away from any other cafes or stores. The room was clean and in good condition. There is a restaurant at the hotel and we had a decent dinner, including 2 glasses of wine, for 500MKD. The breakfast was buffet style and included hot fried eggs, French toast, cheese rolls, plus the usual bread, boiled eggs, veggies and cheese – delicious. The room rate seems high for Macedonia but there isn’t much choice in Kavadarci. The other hotel, Hotel Uni Palais, is more in the centre of the city but it was full when we arrived and their second property was a ways out of town and did not look very appealing. There are also a couple of hotels in Negotino, about 10k to the northeast.
Bitola (92k from Kavadarci) – Villa Diamond Hotel, 11 Oktomvri 4 Bitola (http://www.villadiamond.com.mk/). We paid 30€ (1800MKD) for a double room with ensuite, wi-fi in room, TV with English channels and refrigerator. Breakfast was 5€ extra, laundry was 5€. Bikes were stored on small patio outside room. Clean and comfortable room in a good location right in town centre close to the clock tower and the main pedestrian street but far enough to avoid the noise.
Ohrid (72k from Bitola) – Villa Lucija, ul Kosta Abras 29 Ohrid (www.vilalucija.com). We paid 25€ for a double room with ensuite, refrigerator, TV with English channels, balcony, wi-fi in room, and use of shared kitchen. Bikes were stored on patio. Nice clean room right on the lake in the old part of the city, easy walk to pedestrian area with lots of restaurants and cafes.
Debar (68k from Ohrid) – Hotel Venec, on main road in centre of town – look for restaurant on bottom floor. This is an expensive hotel for Macedonia but unfortunately there are not many hotel options in town. We paid 2500MKD (21€/person) for double ensuite, TV with English channels, breakfast included. The hotel was just re-opening after extensive renovations so the rooms were clean and comfortable but the wi-fi was not up and running yet. Bikes were kept locked in a stairwell inside. Quite a few restaurants and cafes nearby. We heard there were a couple of thermal hotels nearby but we didn’t see them.
