Rest days in Rocky

(Written by Nancy)

**Note — posts for 13th-15th have now been updated**

Waking up on the first day of a several day rest break is one of the nicest feelings! First up was a big brekkie of eggs on toast with salsa and bacon, with a couple of nice cups of coffee. That fuelled us up for our trek to the computer stores to see what we could do about our computer.

We tried two repair places – both would charge a bit over $100 to diagnose the problem, and timing on any repairs or replacements was a bit iffy. We discussed a bit – the feedback we were getting on the computer and the way it was acting was not good and it probably could not be repaired. Seemed kind of crazy to spend $100+ to be told it could not be repaired when we could buy a new computer for somewhere between $300-$400. We continued walking up to a nearby mall where we knew there were some department stores and electronic shops.

We stopped at JB Hi-Fi and found a nice salesguy who walked us through the options they had. He also thought our computer sounded a bit of a lost cause and even let Dave plug it into one of their monitors to rule out a bad graphics card. No luck getting it to do anything. They had an Acer notebook D255E for $298 so we went with that. No point worrying about it any longer. And thankfully, Dave has been very good about backups so we were only missing about 3 days of info, which we can easily recreate.

So, while we were at the mall we did some other chores and Dave headed back to the YHA to get the computer working while I splurged on a haircut. By the time I got back he had the computer working and was recreating our files from the backup drive. Yeah – we are back on line!!

This morning I worked on the missing posts while Dave did a thorough clean of the bikes. We will have some lunch and then head off to do some sightseeing. We have some planning to do as well, as we head west from here toward Longreach and then on to Mt Isa – into the Outback!

We’ll do another post tomorrow to let you know all of the exciting things to do in Rockhampton!

  1. Good to see! And the lodgings looks not too bad – covered veranda and all!
Enjoy the opportunities of civilization while you can!

  2. So glad the computer issues were resolved! we were feeling a bit deprived … looking forward to hearing more about Rockhampton and plans for the outback — . Having a computer breakdown seems right on par with events this side of the world; not that that should make you feel any better, but you’re not alone …take care …

    • Yes, we are glad it is too!  Feels odd to be cut off – but perhaps that is good once in awhile to make sure we don’t get too dependent on the technology.  Hope you are starting to get some spring/summer weather there – getting cold here at night but warm during the days.  Good for sleeping and riding!

  3. hi guys, nice to catch up with the posts… Qantas have a musium at Longreach might be able to shake hands with John Travolta…..:)

    • The Qantas museum is definitely on the list – suspect we will need a day or two off in Longreach to see everything and plan the big push to Winton and on to Mt Isa. Wide open spaces out there…

  4. That snake picture from donaleen is absolutely horrible and chilling! I’m not coming over again until you can guarantee that these only live in Mississippi!
I’m off to find a map of Australia for Marian so she can track your trip. She wants to be able to send you a letter! Maybe she will write and I’ll email it!. Love, Mom

    • In spite of the warning sign at the infromation centre, we’ve seen nothing but flattened snakes so far.  Pretty much all we’ve ever seen in all of our years in Oz.  That’s probably good given the photo!
